BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE: David Lewis Dunham (1840-1922), was a Confederate veteran. In his early youth he worked at the first railroad in Florida. In 1861 he enlisted and served at the front until becoming a prisoner of war at Gettysburg (07/03/1863). After the war was over, he returned to St. Augustine and worked in the Land Department Office as clerk, tax collector, and was then appointed U.S. Deputy Marshall. Later on he served as deputy Circuit Court Clerk.
His son, David Ross Dunham (1886-1964), practiced law in St. Augustine starting in 1910, and also served as a judge in the District Court. He served as president of the Historical Society from 1932 to 1956, and later on served as a member of the Board of Directors.
